Backtesting vs Forward Testing - Forex

People spend a lot of time backtesting trading strategies but neglect forward testing (demo trading). This is one of the most important activities for traders to do. When we were in school we learned a lot of information, but most of us struggled to apply that information in the real world. Most traders can sit in front of trading view and “backtest” all weekend, but not many of them can trade their strategy with consistency and discipline and through losses because they haven’t spent enough time forward testing. You need a period in your career where you can take trades without the burden of losing money. Focusing on the strategy is done through forward testing.

Forward testing is a thing…. Backtesting is looking at historical data and collecting the results of the strategy. Sometimes data could be overfitting in the backtest and you can come across repainting or maybe you didn’t test over a large enough period of time and you came across favorable data. Forward testing is testing the strategy on live market data, which could be paper trading or just using a small amount of capital to limit exposure until you make sure that the backtest results are roughly the same in live market conditions
